Lupus nephritis

1.

2.

Origin
"a malignant disease with ulcers that quickly corrode the body like a hungry
wolf"-the definition of lupus given in 1590.
In 1872, Moritz Kaposi published the first extensive article describing not only skin
manifestations, but also organ lesions accompanied by severe course leading to
death.

3.

Characteristic
Lupus nephritis is an inflammation of the kidneys caused by systemic
lupus erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease. Genetic
predisposition plays a significant role in the development of lupus
nephritis.
There are 5 classes of lupus nephritis (from 1 to 5). 1-2 degrees — mild
inflammation, 3-5 — severe inflammation and greater kidney damage.

4.

General symptoms of lupus nephritis include
• Fever
• Edema
• High blood pressure
• Joint pain
• Muscle pain
• Malar rash
• Foamy urine

5.

Diagnostic methods
• General urine analysis
• Blood tests
• Biopsy

6.

Treatment
Lupus nephritis cannot be cured, you can only get rid of the main symptoms of the disease.
However, in 10-30% of patients, the disease progresses, leading to severe irreversible renal
failure.
Treatment of lupus nephritis involves the use of drugs that inhibit the function of the immune
system (immunosuppressants) and reduce the production of autoantibodies.
When nephritis leads to severe renal failure, kidney replacement treatment — dialysis - is
necessary. If the kidneys are already irreversibly damaged, kidney replacement therapy is
necessary for the rest of your life, and kidney transplantation is considered the best option.

Preventive measures
• Patients with lupus nephritis should
be under constant supervision of a
rheumatologist and a nephrologist.
• Take medications strictly as
prescribed by a specialist, since
stopping treatment ahead of time
will lead to a worsening or
recurrence of the disease.
• There is currently no way to prevent
this disease because the cause of
systemic lupus erythematosus is
unknown.
