Volchansk (until 1956 — the settlement of
Lesnaya Volchanka) is a city in the
Sverdlovsk region of Russia, the
administrative center of the Volchansky
urban district.

The decree of the RF Government from July 29,
2014 No. 1398-R "On approval of the list of
towns" the city is included in the category "nondiversified municipal education of the Russian
Federation (monotowns) with the most difficult
socio-economic situation".

The city is located on the Eastern slope of the Northern Urals, on
the Malaya lupus And Bolshaya Lupus rivers (Ob basin), 452 km
from Yekaterinburg and 17 km from Karpinsk.The relief of the
city is transitional from mountainous to flat.To the West of
Volchansk there are several large lakes: Antipinskoye, Big and
Small Knapinski; wetlands: Large, Stokowski, Chmelewski,
Leigh.A significant part of the city is occupied by coal mines and
waste rock dumps.

The settlement of Lupus on the Lupus
river originated around 1850. The first
settler was Pryanishnikov, who settled
exclusively for hunting and buying
Sables and other furs from hand-tohand Voguls. In 1908, the village had
fourteen courtyards, an Orthodox
chapel, and a Zemstvo station. Three
kilometers from the settlement was
the New Lupus gold mine.
