MOSCOW RIVER

7.

The Moscow River begins in the Starkovsky swamp, located on the Smolensk-Moscow
upland. In the old days, the source of the river was called the Moskvoretskaya puddle. At a
distance of 16 km from the source of the Moskva River passes through Mikhalevsky Lake in
the Smolensk region. It is believed that the Moscow River actually flows out of this lake.
The total length of the Moskva River is 502 km, the basin area is 17,600 sq. km. The Moskva
River is a left tributary of the Oka, flowing into it on the territory of Kolomna. It is not known
exactly where the name of the river came from, but there are many interesting versions
regarding this issue. There are rivers with similar names on the territory of Ukraine, Poland
and Germany. Some scientists tend to believe that the root of the word means swamp, mud,
moisture or tortuosity.

History of the river formation
• From time immemorial, the Moscow
River has been an important transport
highway connecting Moscow with
Novgorod, Smolensk, communicating
with the Volga and the Don. Back in the
first millennium AD, tribes of Vyatichi
and Finno-Ugrians and Balts settled on
the banks of the river. In the past, the
Moskva River often overflowed, and
these floods caused great damage to
the residents of the city. In 1783, a
drainage canal was built along the old
riverbed (along the Staritsa). Together
with the main channel of the Moskva
River, this channel formed the island of
Balchug. The canal begins in the area of
the Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge and rejoins
the Moskva River near the Sluice
Embankment.

10.

In total, about 70 different tributaries flow into the river on the territory of Moscow, most of which are hidden in
drainage pipes. The narrowest part of the river is located opposite the Kremlin – 120 meters, and the widest –
in the Luzhniki district. There are practically no natural banks left at the Moskva River, the riverbed is fenced
with concrete slabs and granite. More than 20 bridges, including pedestrian bridges, have been built across
the largest and most famous Moscow River. As for the water quality in the river, it leaves much to be desired.
The content of zinc and heavy metals in it far exceeds the permissible norms, so swimming in the Moskva
River is strongly discouraged. In the summer season, you can ride a river tram along the Moscow River.
