An exploration of Chapter 2 of ‘Lord of the Flies’
Task A: Chapter 2: What do the boys need?
You might have said:
1.
The boys attempt to build a functioning society by holding a meeting and deciding that
they will use the conch as a way of managing their debates. They build a re inspired by the
idea that the smoke will attract the attention of a rescue ship.
2.
The boys’ attempts are thwarted by the fact they don’t know enough to think things
through. So, they build a re that burns out too soon and damages the island. Also, their
carelessness leads to the (we presume) death of the boy with the “mulberry” mark.
Task B: Chapter 2: Nobody listens to Piggy
This is what the Oak pupils said:
Izzy
Golding thinks that intelligence should be listened to, but that
most people can’t stop themself from acting impulsively and that
leads to danger.
Golding shows us that Piggy has many of the qualities of a good wise
leader, but the boys would never have elected him because he seems too
weak to be a leader.
