Understanding Chapter 5Explanation
Recap:Discuss: What do you predict might happen next?
● in Chapter 4, we see how the boys are struggling and largely failing to build a
functioning society
● there is increasingly open tension between Ralph (the elected chief) and Jack
(the hunter)
● Jack’s choir were meant to keep the signal fire going, but Jack took them with
him to hunt for pigs
● the hunt was successful and there is a feast of meat
● however, a ship passed by the island and there was no signal fire; Ralph and
Piggy are angry about missing an opportunity to be rescued
● Ralph calls an emergency meeting

There will be a huge
row. The tension
between Ralph and
Jack is so strong that
they will never
resolve their
difficulties.
Maybe the meeting
will clear the air.
Things have to
change and I hope
they will change for
the better.

Understanding Chapter 5Explanation
Read Chapter 5.
You need a copy of the ‘Lord of the Flies’ for this lesson. Please ensure that
you are using the Faber & Faber; Main edition (3 Mar. 1997).
Read the whole of the chapter. It starts on page 81 and ends on page
102.
As you read, consider the following questions:
● Which boys are lining up behind Ralph and which behind Jack?
● Why do they choose one “leader” over the other?

Task AUnderstanding Chapter 5
Practice
This chapter becomes increasingly acrimonious
leading to a split between the boys.
Discuss: Use the following sentence starters to explain how the
acrimonious split is caused, developed and not resolved.
● The acrimony between Jack and Ralph flares up in this chapter
because …
● Simon and Piggy both try to explain their ideas, but …
● The “littluns’” fear of the beast is very strong, so …

Feedback
You might have said:
● The acrimony between Jack and Ralph flares up in this chapter because
Jack is openly challenging Ralph’s authority. Jack has had enough of
“meetings” and is feeling excited and proud about having killed the pig.
Ralph feels his authority slipping away. He won’t blow the conch a
second time in case the boys ignore the sound and don’t return.
● Simon and Piggy both try to explain their ideas, but nobody will listen to
them. Simon is laughed at and falls silent. When Piggy tries to talk, he
is shouted down.
● The littluns’ fear of the beast is very strong, so it affects the entire group.
Once the fear is spoken out loud, the group’s mood changes.

Explaining the boys’ fearsExplanation
Fear in Chapter 5
Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain or
harm.
Many different fears are being expressed in Chapter 5.
Discuss: what are the fears?
Focus on the characters and think about what they are
frightened of e.g. the fear that they will not be rescued.
13.
Explaining the boys’ fearsExplanation
You might have made a list that looks like this:
Fears include:
that they won’t be rescued
the beast
ghosts
each other
loss of order
loss of authority and control
loss of status
Discuss:
The boys have different
fears and some have more
fears than others.
Who fears what or whom?

Explaining the boys’ fearsExplanation
Recap of two keywords:
● if something is rational, it is logical and informed by known facts

said.
Rational fears are the more frightening because they
are real. For example Piggy is right to be be afraid of
Jack; Jack’s hostility is evident.
Izzy
Fear of the unknown is scarier. That’s why the majority of
the boys have irrational fears such as ghosts and
imaginary beasts. Jack uses that fear to seize power.
