Did you use evidence from the text?
Piggy’s death is unexpected
and that is what makes it so
shocking. There are horrible,
explicit details. For example,
we are told how far Piggy fell
and how his head “opened”. It
was sudden and upsetting.
Sam
It is shocking but not
unexpected. Roger has
already shown signs of cruelty.
Earlier, he wanted to throw
stones at another boy. When
he pushes the rock on Piggy,
Golding says he is “delirious”.
Roger enjoys evil.

Piggy in Chapter 11
Explanation
We could plot the changes in Piggy along this timeline.
At the start of the
novel, Piggy is marked
out as weaker than
the others. He
sometimes struggles
to make himself
heard. He thinks the
others are immature.
As the novel proceeds, In Chapter 11, Piggy

Task B
Piggy in Chapter 11
Practice
Discuss: what can you infer from Golding’s depiction of
Piggy (the way he is shown) in Chapter 11?
Consider:
● Piggy’s strengths and weaknesses
● the fact that Piggy carries the conch
● how the other characters respond to Piggy
Think of as many ideas as you can. Use the following sentence structure to explain
your ideas: In Chapter 11, Piggy is shown to be …, so maybe Golding is saying

For example: In Chapter 11, Piggy is shown to be courageous when he stands
up to Jack, so maybe Golding is saying that true bravery is facing your fears.

15.

Task B
Piggy in Chapter 11
Feedback
Here are some possible ideas.
In Chapter 11, Piggy is shown to be …
● … determined by carrying the conch, so maybe Golding is saying that
in times of crisis, it is essential to hold onto things that unite people.
● … moral when he appeals to the boys’ sense of right and wrong, so
maybe Golding is saying we should never lose our principles.
● … physically vulnerable when he is attacked, so maybe Golding is
saying that brute strength will always defeat words and morality.
● … naive in his belief in the conch’s protection, so maybe Golding is
saying that faith in civilisation alone cannot protect one from savagery.
