It was very dark. Rusty could sense that something was near. The young tomcat’s eyes
opened wide as he scanned the forest. The place was unfamiliar and the smells were
strange. His stomach growled – he was hungry.
Suddenly, Rusty saw something small and grey in the grass. It was hiding in the leaves.
Rusty knew it was a mouse – he could feel the pulsing of a tiny heart. Soon his stomach
would be full.
Rusty jumped and almost got the mouse. It tried to escape into a hole in the ground, but
Rusty was faster. Suddenly, he heard a noise and looked around. In a second, the mouse
ran away. Rusty was angry. The strange noise was getting more familiar. Something was
rattling. Rusty blinked and opened his eyes.

went into the garden through the cat flap. He wanted back the feeling of freedom from
his dream. Back in the house, his owners called him: they went to bed and invited him

Rusty sat beyond the fence and wondered if Smudge’s words were true. He licked his fur
nervously. He heard a mouse and jumped but wasn’t fast enough to catch it. Then he heard
another noise. It was muted. What was it? Pawsteps? Rusty realized that he was in danger
only when something hit him. The creature gripped him with very sharp claws and pricked
his neck with very sharp teeth. For a moment Rusty felt helpless but then he had an idea.
He flipped over onto his back knocking the breath out of his enemy. It worked; Rusty
sprinted towards the house but his attacker followed him, and Rusty decided to stay and
fight. They fought for a minute and then the aggressive creature sat still, all the aggression
gone. It turned out to be a grey kitten a bit bigger than Rusty.

“Hey there, kittypet”, meowed the grey tom. “You’ve fought well for

kittypet, but don’t tell me you know nothing about the four warrior
clans that hunt on these lands. I belong to ThunderClan but there
are others, like ShadowClan. They come to steal our prey, and it’s
the job of our warriors to keep them out of our territoty.”
“So you are not a warrior yet?”
“Did you think I was?” Greypaw purred proudly. “I won’t be a real
warrior for ages. You need to finish your training first, and kittens
begin training only when they are six moons old. It’s actually my first
time as an apprentice”.
“And why don’t you just find a home? Your owners will feed you and
your life will be safe and comfortable.”
“And eat that tasteless dry food for the rest of my life? And never go
beyond the garden walls? Never! I want to be free! Have you ever
tried a live mouse? You can’t feel freedom before you taste a
mouse, kittypet. But what’s that? I smell warriors from my clan.
They won’t be please to find you hunting in our territory. Run,
quickly!”
