At the initiative of the Committee of the Supreme
Council of the Russian Federation on Defense and
Security, the new name of the holiday was introduced
by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Council
of the Russian Federation of February 8, 1993 N 4423-1
"On the establishment of a significant day of the
Russian Federation - the Day of Defenders of the
Fatherland."

Since 2002, by decision of the State Duma of the
Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation,
February 23 is a non-working holiday in Russia and
this date is celebrated as "Defender of the
Fatherland Day" in accordance with the Federal
Law of the Russian Federation No. 32-FZ of March
13, 1995
