Today I want to tell you about Scottish mythical creature, named Kelpie. It
lives in lakes and rivers, though somebody claims seeing Kelpie in the seas.

In Scottish folklore, a kelpie is a water beast, hostile to the humans.
According to some folk tales the kelpie can also shape-shift into human form. It can
be identified by seaweed in his hair or hooves instead of hands.

The kelpie appears to their human victims as a beautiful horse, entices them to ride on
their back, then takes them under the water for eating.

4
Human can catch kelpie using magic bridle, but then there’s a big trouble of not
allowing kelpie to see or feel the river or lake nearby. If this condition is broken,
caught kelpie immediately frees itself with dire consequences for it’s owner.

It is said that kelpies can stretch the
length of their backs to carry several people
to their doom together. There is a tale
about some children who met a kelpie. All
but one climb on to it’s back while the last
child stays on the shore. He pets the
neck of the kelpie to find his hand is
attached to it. He frees himself by
cutting off his hand and survives the
encounter with the malicious creature only
to helplessly watch his friends being
dragged down into the depths of the water
where they were devoured and their
entrails thrown to the waters edge.
