Lesson №4
"Anthropometry (Or Somatometry)"

4.

Anthropometry is the measurement of morphological characteristics of the
body, which allows us to quantitatively describe its structure. Body weight
and height, the circumference of the chest and waist, the girth of the
shoulder and lower leg, the thickness of the skin-fat fold – all this (and
much more) is traditionally measured by anthropologists using medical
scales, a height meter, an anthropometer and other special devices.

5.

Key indicators:
-Height
-Body weight
-Chest circumference (with maximum inhalation, pause and maximum
exhalation)
-The power of the brushes
-Standing strength (strength of the back muscles)
Additional indicators:
-Sitting height
-Neck circumference
-Size of waist, hip and shin, shoulder
-Arm length , etc.

6.

When measuring standing height, the patient stands with his back to the vertical rack,
touching it with his heels, buttocks and the interscapular area.
The tablet is lowered to contact with the head.
When measuring height while sitting, the patient sits on a
bench, touching the vertical rack with the
buttocks and the interscapular area.
Measuring height in a sitting position when compared with other
longitudinal dimensions gives an idea of the proportions of the body.

7.

To determine any longitudinal size, you need to know the location of the upper
and lower anthropometric points that limit this size. The difference between
their height and is the desired value!!!!

8.

Body weight is determined by weighing on lever medical scales.
Body weight in total expresses the level of development of the musculoskeletal system,
subcutaneous fat layer and internal organs.

9.

The circumferences of the head, chest, shoulder, hip, lower leg are measured
with a centimeter tape

10.

The muscular strength of the arms characterizes the degree of musculature
development and is measured by a manual dynamometer (in kg). Make 2-3
measurements, record the largest indicator. The indicator depends on the
age, gender and the type of sport that the subject is engaged in.

11.

The standing force determines the strength of the extensor muscles of the back
and is measured by a standing dynamometer. Contraindications for measuring the
dead strength: hernias (inguinal and umbilical, Schmorl's hernia, etc.,
menstruation, pregnancy, hypertension, myopia (-5 and more), etc.
