History
Most of the territory of the modern city was discovered and belonged to the Spaniards. In 1784,
the Kingdom of Spain transferred to Juan Jose Dominguez, a former Spanish soldier, an area of
about 300 km2 in the southwestern part of Los Angeles County. After the Mexican-American War
of 1846-1848, this territory was ceded to the United States of America. In December 1866, two
Americans, Francis Temple and Fielding Gibson, acquired ownership of a plot of land of about
18.6 km2. In December 1867, a group of settlers led by Griffith Compton and William Morton
founded a community on the banks of the Los Angeles River. At first, the settlement was called
Gibsonville in honor of the landowner, but it was soon renamed first to Comptonville, and in
1869 to Compton — to avoid confusion with the city of the same name, located north of
Sacramento. And on May 11, 1888, the village of Compton received the status of a city.

Crime Rate
Compton is one of the most criminally dangerous cities in the United States. The number of
murders exceeds the national average by 8 times. So in 2005, 75 premeditated murders, 40
rapes, 474 robberies, 1,157 assaults, 638 burglaries, 971 thefts, 1,006 carjackings and 91 arson
were committed in the city. During 2006, the number of murders decreased from 22 in four
months to 5.

There are two gangs, that are the biggest in the US, Crips and Bloods.

Crips
Crips is the biggest gang in the USA, they got from 125 – 130 thousand members. Its activities
include drug trafficking, murder, robbery, forgery, extortion, theft, arms trafficking, fraud. The
distinctive sign of the gang is clothing, accessories, etc. in blue, light blue and gray colors. The
most famous members are Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, MC Ren, Eazy-E, O.T. Genasis, Blueface,
Warren G, Ice-T. They got dance called C-Walk, Initially, the members of the Crips gang used
dexterous movements of their legs in order to visually depict their name or some other word
from the Crips arsenal (sometimes in this way they "wrote" the word Bloods, the name of the
group feuding with them, and then crossed it out).

Bloods
Bloods are big gang too, they got from 20 to 30 thousand members. Their activities are same to
the Crips, but in but in smaller quantities. The most famous members are Suge Knight (Death
Row Records CEO and founder), 2Pac, 21 Savage, DJ Quik, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Ol’ Dirty
Bastard. Also they got dance called B-Walk. A dance similar to the C-Walk, but with modified leg
movements, where the letter C is crossed out.
