Viktor Tsoi was born inLeningrad on June 21, 1962 in
the family of physical
education teacher Valentina
Vasilievna Tsoi and engineer
Robert Maksimovich Tsoi. The
parents were such different
people that it was generally
unclear how they lived
together. Victor had no
brothers or sisters. His
mother was Russian, a native
of Leningrad, and his father
was Korean, originally from
Kazakhstan, and spoke
Russian rather poorly.

In 1969, Victor went to schoolwhere his mother worked. In
total, during his education
until the eighth grade, he
changed three schools.
Tsoi showed a penchant for
drawing from early childhood,
so his parents enrolled him in
art school from the fourth
grade, where he studied until
1977.

Music, like drawing, was one ofVictor’s constant hobbies. His parents
gave him his first guitar in the fifth
grade. While studying at art school, he
met Maxim Pashkov, with whom he
later organized the group "Палата
№6".
In 1977, he graduated from eight
classes and entered the art school
named after. V. Serov, to the design
department. But fonts and posters
were a burden to him. My passion for
music brought me much more
satisfaction.

In 1979, he was expelled from school “for pooracademic performance,” after which he went
to work at a factory and entered evening
school. Later he studied at SGPTU No. 61,
specializing in wood carving, after which he
worked for a short time in the restoration
workshops of the Catherine Palace Museum in
the city of Pushkin, Leningrad Region.
In 1980, Tsoi began performing at apartment
concerts in Moscow together with members of
the «Автоматические удовлетворители»
group. In 1981, he made his stage debut as a
bass guitarist in the Leningrad cafe "Трюм".
From these concerts, in the summer of 1981,
the group “Garin and the Hyperboloids” arose,
which included Viktor Tsoi, Alexey Rybin and
Oleg Valinsky. In the fall of 1981, the group
entered the Leningrad rock club. After Oleg
Valinsky left, the group was renamed “Кино”.

In 1982, the «Кино»group made its debut
on the stage of the
Leningrad Rock Club,
after which the first
album of the group
“45” was released,
produced by Boris
Grebenshchikov
(leader of the
«Аквариум» group).
In the fall of 1982, he
worked as a
woodcarver at a
gardening trust.

In the second half of 1984,the second line-up of the
«Кино» group was
formed, which included:
Viktor Tsoi (guitar, vocals),
Yuri Kasparyan (guitar,
vocals), Georgy "Gustav"
Guryanov (drums, vocals),

Maryana, who since 1982
worked as an
administrator of the Kino

1985, their son Alexander

separated several years
before the musician’s
death, but the couple did
not officially divorce.

concert program in the USA and
recorded the album “Красная
волна” there.

got a job as a driver at the
famous Kamchatka boiler house.
In the spring of 1987, the last performance took
place at the rock club festival, where the «Кино»
group received a prize “for creative majority.”
