2.

Overview
Consists of:
Metro
Northwest
Metro City &
Southwest
Metro Western
Sydney Airport
Metro West

3.

4.

Aim of the project
Transform Sydney for
generations to come.
Create about 10,000
direct and 70,000 indirect
jobs during construction.

5.

Features
• Faster, more frequent access to major employment and education centers like Parramatta and Sydney
Olympic Park.
• A new metro stations in the heart of the Sydney CBD commercial center, connecting directly to
Sydney’s established and growing employment precincts.
• Integrated with the rest of Sydney’s public transport system.
• Fully accessible with lifts and level access between trains and platforms.
• Next generation fully air-conditioned metro trains.
• All Sydney Metro infrastructure like the stations, trains and railway tracks are owned by the NSW
Government.

6.

Planning process
The first step was made in March 2011.
Two years after the opening of the
Metro Northwest line, the Coalition
government faces growing challenges:
• A boom in major infrastructure
projects across the country.
• Not enough competitors.
• Time risks + cost risks

7.

The second stage of
Sydney’s emerging metro
network will comprise a
line from Chatswood to
Sydenham and Bankstown.
Shown the cost of the
Metro City and Southwest
line, which is due to open
in 2024, risks blowing out
to as much as $16.8 billion.

8.

The third stage from
central Sydney to
Parramatta that is the
costliest.
Metro West could cost
almost $27 billion and be
opened as late as 2033.

9.

Build an $11 billion metro line
from St Marys to the new Western
Sydney Airport by 2026.
The cost will far outweigh the
benefits.

10.

One more
challenge
Rodd Staples, regarded as the
architect of the metro lines, was
fired without cause.
Jon Lamonte, the head of Sydney
Metro, quit last month for a job to
run a New Zealand water utility.
A leadership vacuum could be
costly for taxpayers.

11.

Shortage of materials and
equipment.
Conclusion
Capital cost of building
Sydney’s metro rail network
is to surpass $60 billion.
A leadership vacuum.
