What is The United Nations?
The United Nations (UN) is an
international organization established
to maintain and strengthen
international peace and security.
The UN was founded on the 26th June
in1945 and replaced the League of
Nations, an organization conceived
under similar circumstances during the
First World War and established in 1919
in accordance with the Treaty of
Versailles "to promote cooperation
between peoples and to ensure peace
and security", but which could not
prevent a new world war.

THE UNITED NATIONS
Since 2011, 193 countries have been members of the UN — almost all
sovereign states of the world. The UN structure includes six main
bodies: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and
Social Council (ECOSOC), the Trusteeship Council, the International
Court of Justice and the UN Secretariat. A number of specialized
international agencies, funds and programs operate within the broader
UN system, including the World Bank Group, the World Health
Organization, the World Food Program, UNESCO and UNICEF. The chief
administrative officer of the UN is the UN Secretary-General; since
2017, this post has been held by Portuguese diplomat Antonio
Guterres.
The ninth Secretary-General of the
United Nations, Antonio Guterres,
took office on January 1, 2017.
