Biography
Alexis Karrel was born in 28 of
June, 1873 near Lyon.
His father, Alexis Carrel-Billiard
and mother, Anna Maria.
The first education that Carrel
received was religious.
He graduated from the medical
faculty of the University of Lyons,
in 1900 received a doctorate in
medicine. From 1900 to 1902 he
taught anatomy at the university,
from 1902 he began to develop
methods for stitching blood
vessels.

Carrel suture
In 1906 he was invited
to
the
Rockefeller
Institute for Medical
Research in New York.
Here he was engaged in
the development of an
end-to-end
stitching
technique for blood
vessels (Carrel suture),
which allows organ
transplantation
while
preserving
their
functions.

Technique for growing tissue
culture
In 1911-1915 he developed a technique for growing
tissue culture using blood plasma and embryonic fluid,
which made it possible to maintain the growth of one
tissue culture for many years.

Perfusion pump
In 1930-1935, Carrel, together with C. Lindberg, designed a "perfusion
pump" - an artificial heart, with the help of which it was possible to
supply an isolated organ with blood and oxygen. The results of this work
were published in the article The Culture of Organs (1938).
