Choosing a researchtopic
When choosing a research topic, we were guided by the most interesting
natural phenomena for us and chose a tornado. Since the most destructive
tornadoes most often occur in the United States, it was this country that
became the object of our research. Frequent tornadoes in the United States
are caused by the collision of air masses with very different temperatures.
Warm humid air from the Gulf of Mexico collides in the United States with
cold air from Canada and dry air from the Rocky Mountains. Under such
conditions, a large number of thunderstorms occur, which carry the threat of
a tornado. The most destructive and deadly tornadoes form under enormous
cumulonimbus clouds. These clouds often bring heavy hail, squall winds,
heavy thunderstorms and showers, and tornadoes.
Although tornadoes in the United States are found in various regions - both
in the lowland regions of America, and on the east coast of the United States
and on the Florida Peninsula, the most frequent and strong tornadoes occur
in the so-called Tornado Alley, the conditional boundaries of which cover the
13 central states of the country. In the cities of these states, there are special
sirens warning of the appearance of a tornado, and even during construction,
houses are equipped with anti-tornado shelters.

ActualityWe chose this topic because it is very
relevant, especially in USA.This topic is very
relevant, since tornadoes do not occur so often
in Russia. And we are interested in learning
more this natural phenomenon. We also hope
that we can better dwell upon this problem.

1.Learn thenature of
tornadoes
A tornado is a violently rotating column of air that extends from a
thunderstorm to the ground. It's often portended by a dark,
greenish sky. Black storm clouds gather. Baseball-size hail may
fall. A funnel suddenly appears, as though descending from a
cloud. The funnel hits the ground and roars forward with a sound
like that of a freight train approaching. The tornado tears up
everything in its path. The most violent tornadoes come from
supercells, large thunderstorms that have winds already in
rotation. About one in a thousand storms becomes a supercell,
and one in five or six supercells spawns off a tornado.
Tornadoes can occur at any time of year, but they are more
common during a distinct season that begins in early spring for
the states along the Gulf of Mexico. The season follows the jet
stream—as it swings farther north, so does tornado activity. May
generally has more tornadoes than any other month, but April's
twisters are sometimes more violent. Farther north, tornadoes
tend to be more common later in summer.

2.Cantornadoes be
predicted?
As others have stated, you cannot “predict” tornadoes. However,
there are signs that could possibly indicate a tornado that’s
already formed or in the process of forming.
First of all, the atmospheric conditions need to be just right for a
supercell to form. Warm moist air, cool dry air, and instability is
necessary for a supercell to occur. Once supercells start to rotate
and form a mesocyclone, there are a couple of things that can tell
you if there’s a chance of a tornado or one is forming.
On radar, a classic way of telling is if there’s a “hook echo”. On
radar, you would see the main thunderstorm and an appendage
that seems to be in the shape of a hook. If you see something like
that on radar and you’re under a tornado warning, head to shelter
if you haven’t already. Hook echoes are big indicators that the
supercell has great rotation. Some hooks are more defined than
others but treat them all a life-threatening situation.

3.Determine theconsequences of a tornado
In the United States over 80 deaths and 1,500 injuries are associated with
tornadoes each year. According to the National Oceanic Atmospheric
Administration, most tornado deaths are caused by people not following
instructions on what to do the right way. They also mention that some people
are not even warned that a tornadic storm is coming, while others get a
warning but do not believe that a tornado will hit their area. In 2012, 68 people
were killed by tornadoes in the United States. Kentucky had the most fatalities,
22. Kentucky was followed by Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Oklahoma , Ohio
, Alabama and Tennessee , and Florida and Kansas.
Over 39 percent of all tornado-related deaths and many injuries come from
residents of mobile homes. It is a widespread myth that tornadoes are
"attracted" to mobile home parks and cause the most fatalities there because
they hit there the most. This is not true. However, mobile homes do often have
poor construction and do not provide adequate protection during a tornado
event. An example to confirm this occurred in April 1991, when a very
powerful tornado struck the town of Andover, Kansas. When the town was hit,
eighty-four homes and fourteen businesses were destroyed by the tornado, but
with no fatalities and only minor injuries. After the tornado hit Andover, it
swept through a mobile home park consisting of 223 trailers. The park did have
a tornado shelter, to which over 200 residents fled and survived without
injuries. Others that did not take shelter in the tornado shelter stayed in their
mobile homes, and thirteen of them were killed by the tornado.

4.Actions ofAmericans
during a
tornado
Find out what you can do when a tornado strikes. Acting quickly is key to staying
safe and minimizing impacts.
Stay Weather-Ready: Continue to listen to local news or a weather Radio to stay
updated about tornado watches and warnings.
At Your House: If you are in a tornado warning, go to your basement, safe room,
or an interior room away from windows. Don't forget pets if time allows.
At Your Workplace or School: Follow your tornado drill and proceed to your
tornado shelter location quickly and calmly. Stay away from windows and do not
go to large open rooms such as cafeterias, gymnasiums, or auditoriums.
Outside: Seek shelter inside a sturdy building immediately if a tornado is
approaching. Sheds and storage facilities are not safe. Neither is a mobile home
or tent. If you have time, get to a safe building.
In a vehicle: Being in a vehicle during a tornado is not safe. The best course of
action is to drive to the closest shelter. If you are unable to make it to a safe
shelter, either get down in your car and cover your head or abandon your car and
seek shelter in a low-lying area such as a ditch or ravine.

5.The impact of tornadoeson consciousness of
Americans
People who live in areas of
frequent tornadoes should be
constantly on the alert. As their
lives are almost always threatened
by this natural disaster. These
people should be prepared for the
fact that they may lose their homes,
cars, or worse, become victims of
tornadoes themselves. This leaves a
special imprint on consciousness
and, in general, on their lives.

6.To study life ofAmericans after
tornadoes
Fortunately, people affected by
tornadoes most often remain
alive, but what about material
losses? If a house gets in the
way even with a weak tornado,
it will still suffer a lot and major
repairs will be required, let
alone what happens to cars or
other similar vehicles that were
caught in a tornado. So, the
Tornado suffers huge material
losses. Of course, the
government will help the
victims, but you should not
count on it.

ConclusionA tornado is a very dangerous and destructive
natural phenomenon that is difficult to predict. Every
year, the US economy suffers huge losses due to
destructive tornadoes. Also, tornadoes in the United
States have been repeatedly recognized as the most
dangerous natural phenomenon due to their frequent
occurrence and destructive power.
