My name is Alexander Skirving Watson. I’m a British phrarmacist who comes to Hong Kong in the 1850s when it is still a
small fishing village. I become the first store manager of the Hong Kong Dispensary which is founded in 1841, the very first
drugstore for Western medicine in the city. Later, we register the company, under my name A.S. Watson & Company Limited in
1886. And we become one of the longest standing companies in Hong Kong and even the world 180 years later. Here’s my
story.

In the early days, I already realise the mission of a pharmacy is to care for people’s wellness, and we also help the needy
with free medicines. I wouldn’t have known that this heritage stays with the company until today.

Scripts:
In 1903, we build our first Watsons Water plant to provide clean water to people for drinking, and also for treating patients.
Seeing people smile becomes an everyday mission.

1987

Our entrepreneurial spirit motivates us to continue expanding the business. By 1981, A.S. Watson has 75 retail stores
and is acquired by Hutchison Whampoa, a company led by the legendary Mr. Li Ka Shing. Today, Hutchison Whampoa is
renamed as CK Hutchison and is a Fortune Global 500 company. From 1987, we start our expansion journey overseas to
Taiwan, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and reopen in Mainland China. We’ve also recently opened in
the Middle East, helping people Look Good, Feel Great.

A.S. Watson enters the European market in year 2000 with our first acquisition of Savers health & beauty retail
chain in the UK. Between 2000 and 2006, we make numerous other strategic acquisitions of strong brands across
Europe, bringing Kruidvat, Superdrug, Trekpleister, Drogas, Rossmann, ICI PARIS XL, Marionnaud and The Perfume
Shop into our family. Thereafter, we stay focused on organic growth and continue to expand our retail portfolio, and
become the world’s largest international health and beauty retailer.

We stay leading since then and never want to stand still. Staying relevant to customers becomes ever more important.

I am proud that we now have 140,000 colleagues worldwide, serving 5.3 billion customers every year with a network of over 16,000
