Hurricane Katrina started
over the sea in the Gulf of
Mexico on 23 August. A
few days later it hit of the
southern USA. Many
towns and cities suffered
from the effects of the
hurricane, but no city was
more badly hit than New
Orlean.

Family and friends, the police, the army –
many, many people offered help. Helicopters
picked people up from the roofs, of their
houses, neighbours filled boats with food to
give to friends in need.
But the disaster also brought out the worst in
some people. Criminals broke shop windows
and stole everything.

1836 people died in the hurricane
500000 people lost their homes
47 people went missing
economic damage – 125 billion dollares
