2. Task 1

• Write out from any five pages of the book you are reading examples which
illustrate native and borrowed affixes. Comment on their productivity.
1) I think there has been some misunderstanding here.
The prefix mis- is a native affix. It produces the negative meaning.
2) The project was successful in the sense that it drew the attention of everyone.
The suffix -ful is a native affix. It creates adjective from noun and the word with this suffix means an existence
of that noun.
3) A church in Los Angeles has decided to press charges against a homeless man who stole a few cookies from
the church's cookie jar.
The suffix -less is a native suffix. It makes adjective from noun and the word with this suffix means a lack of
that noun.
4) He befriended a thief called Tom.
The prefix be- is a native affix. It creates verb from noun and changes intransitive verbs into transitive ones.
5) Our friendship is very important to me
The suffix -ship is a native affix. It makes noun with a new meaning from noun.

The prefix anti- is a borrowed affix from Greek and means ‘against’.
9) No matter how cold it is outside, the rooms are heated to a comfortable temperature.
The suffix -able is a borrowed affix from Latin and creates adjective from noun.
10) An artist uses many tubes of paint to make a large painting.
The suffix -ist is a borrowed affix from Greek and changes inanimate noun into inanimate noun.
