Socha- is the valley of memories.
Socha in Slovenia- is a beautiful river, originating in a valley
surrounded by picturesque Slovenian Alps. The valley of the
most beautiful river of Slovenia keeps the sad heritage of the
First World War.

Looking at the valley of the Socha river in Slovenia with its
rapids, waterfalls, forests, it is difficult to imagine what
Ernest Hemingway described as a gray and empty place.

Even harder to imagine is
that this valley was once
one of the bloodiest fronts
of the First World War. At
least 1.7 million soldiers
were killed here.

During the First World War, the
Socha River (Italians called it
Isonzo) shared two warring sides:
Italy and Austria-Hungary. From
1915 to 1917 there were 12 major
battles here.

The war forced the whole
population of the valley, which
is about 300,000 people, to leave
their homes and move to the
territory of Austria-Hungary.
Many residents had to sacrifice
their homes to the military, so
that they converted them into
barracks.

When the First World War
ended, these territories
were inhabited by the
Italians, after the Second
World War the Soča valley
became part of Yugoslavia,
and only in the 90s of the
20th century Slovenia
achieved
independence
and now this valley
belongs to it.

Not so long ago the "Alley of the World" was created in the valley,
it is a path with a length of 90 kilometers, divided into five
sections, each of which can be traversed in one day. This alley was
created not only for people to enjoy picturesque views, but also for
them to remember all the horrors of the war.

The Walk of Peace that leads from the Alps to the Adriatic,
combines memory and a reminder of the times of war.
Discover the world of caverns, trenches, military
cemeteries, ossuaries and open-air museums.
The Walk of Peace through its mission is included in the
UNESCO World Heritage List.
