Perm is the most Eastern city of Europe,and therefore its province is often referred to as Eurasia.
Many foreigners are sure,
that in the Urals’ towns
bears walk in the streets.
This is one of them.

Perm is internationally known as the name forthe geological period (290 - 245 million years ago)
in which the Ural Mountain Range was formed.

In contrary to the Urals, Perm itself is ratheryoung. Although the first settlement of Perm
dates back to 16th century, officially it got its
city status in 1723

on 12th of June,
with street
parades,
concerts and
fireworks
throughout the
whole city!

Our city owes its existence to VasiliyTatishchev (1686-1750),who is
believed to be the founder of Perm.
In 1723 he planned and supervised
the construction of the Yegoshikhinsky
Copper Works and founded a factory
near the small river Yegoshikha, a
tributary of the Kama.

Perm is situated on the two large rivers – theKama and the Chusovaya. The major part of
the city stretches along the Kama for 65 km.
Perm has an area of 720 sq km. Its
population is over 1,000,000.

“Salty ears”At the end of the 18th century the
most popular Perm product was salt
which was extracted in the Perm
Province, in Usolye and Solikamsk. It
is said that at the Perm dockers
carried this "white gold" in enormous
sacks on their backs, and their ears
were often covered with salt. That is
why Perm citizens were often called
"permyak - salty ears". There is even
a special monument, where everyone
can take a picture of themselves.

Trans Siberian RailroadIn 1863 part of the Siberian railroad was built in Perm. At
the end of the 19 century it was prolonged up to Eastern
Siberia to connect the West and the East of the country.

In 1863 the Motovilikha Plant was founded andbecame the largest in the Urals. Apart from weapons
for the Russian army, there were also produced steam
ships, engines, etc. Today the plant produces engines
for planes, parts for electric trains and other machines

Furthermore, Russian orthodoxchurches, a mosque, a synagogue
and several Catholic churches
(some dating from the 17th
century) all exist next to each other
in Perm.

One of the most famous stages is Chaikovsky Opera andBallet Theatre. Among its repertoire there are
internationally known performances (for example Romeo
and Juliet, Cleopatra, Aida, Cinderella) as well as Russian
ones: most works of Tchaikovsky have been staged here.
Since 1948 Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre has been on
tours throughout the whole world, performing in countries
such as UK, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Hungary, the
Netherlands, Bulgaria, Germany and China. During its
history, the theatre has received numerous (inter)national
prizes.

The annual Ice sculpturecontest “Snow, Ice and
Flame” is held in the central
park. Sculptors from
different countries take part
in this show.

Another leading stage is Perm Academic DramaTheatre, founded in 1927. Like the Opera and Ballet
Theatre, the Acamedic Drama Theatre has staged the
world’s most prestigious Drama plays (for instance
Ostrovsky, Shakespeare, Gorky and Tolstoy) and has it
won many prizes for its work.

Perm Art Gallery owns a large collection ofarts. Apart from numerous paintings of Flemish,
French and Italian masters, it also has modern
art collections on exhibition. It is located in a
former cathedral, now a landmark of Perm in the
centre of the city. In the gallery you can see a
unique collection of Perm wooden sculpture,
which is a phenomenon of Russian Orthodox
Art. It was spread only in Perm region.

“Khokhlovka” (Open-air museum of Wooden Architecture andEthnography) is in fact a collection of original structures as they existed
in the 17th century. Inside the buildings, all kinds of tools, handicrafts
and clothes of that time are exposed. The guide will take you around
the museum, explaining about the hard life 300 years ago.

Several unique natural objects can be found near Perm. One ofthem is Kungur Ice Cave, which is located in 100 km from Perm. This
is the only cave in Russia that is prepared for excursions. It’s the
world’s sixth longest gypsum cave (5600 m). There are 60 lakes in this
cave.
