It is academic English. However, in this sentence: ”Tattoos had an
element of freak show to them, and they were viewed as a not
quite respectable.” word “freak” doesn’t sound right.

drinking and carousing.
Compound Sentence
Example:The motivations behind tattoos vary, but they are
currently very much in style with no signs of the fad waning.
