ORIGINS
The university traces its history back to 1876, when University College Bristol was founded. It
received a royal charter and university status in 1909. Notably, it was the first higher
education institution in England to admit women on equal terms with men. Its alumni and
faculty include 13 Nobel laureates, among them Sir Winston Churchill, who served as the
university's chancellor from 1929 to 1965.

3. Studying and researching

The university offers over
600 bachelor’s and
master’s degree
programs. Instruction is
provided across six
faculties, covering a wide
range of disciplines. The
university’s research
focuses on addressing
global challenges such as
climate change, health
equity, and digital
transformation.

4. Internationality

Bristol is a major university with an
international environment, home to
around 30,000 students from over 145

The new Temple Quarter Enterprise
Campus is scheduled to open in 2026,
