What is Halloween?
Halloween is celebrated every year on the night of October
31. People dress in costumes, carve pumpkins, and go trickor-treating. It mixes ancient Celtic traditions with modern fun
— a night when the boundary between the living and the
dead feels thin.

Ancient Origins
Halloween comes from the Celtic festival of Samhain, more than
2000 years ago. People believed that on this night the spirits of
the dead could return to the world of the living. Later the
Christian Church turned it into All Hallows’ Eve — the night
before All Saints’ Day.

Main Traditions
Trick-or-treating, costumes, and jack-o’-lanterns are the heart
of modern Halloween. Children go from house to house
asking for candy. People carve scary or funny faces into
pumpkins and put candles inside. Costume parties and
haunted houses complete the night.

Symbols of the Night
Pumpkins, ghosts, black cats, full moons, spiders and
witches. These images come from old folklore. The jack-o’lantern started as a carved turnip in Ireland. Black cats
were once thought to be witches’ companions. Everything
points to the thin line between life and death.

• Americans spend more than $10 billion on Halloween every year.
• The first jack-o’-lanterns were made from turnips, not pumpkins.
• Black and orange became the official colors because they stand
for night and autumn harvest.
• Candy corn was invented in the 1880s and first called “Chicken
