The concept of
metaphors
◦ In modern linguistics, there is a clear definition.
Scientists say that a metaphor is the likening of
one phenomenon to another based on the
similarity of their properties or actions. As a
result, words that are usually used to describe one
thing are now being used to describe another.

The functions of metaphors
◦ The first is the nominative function. It is used to give an object a new 20XX
name.
◦ The second is the figurative function. This metaphor creates a vivid visual image and often
expresses an evaluation.
◦ The third is the cognitive function. It helps to understand one phenomenon through another.
◦ The fourth is the generalizing function. It blurs the boundaries between different concepts,
combining them into a more general category.

THE MUSICAL STYLE OF THE MAYHEM
ALBUM
◦ The album Mayhem was released on March 7, 2025. Even before the release, Lady Gaga said that the album
would be chaotic. And so it turned out. Listening to the album, you never know what will happen in the next
track. In the album, you can find synth-pop, industrial dance, electro, disco, funk, rock, and pop-rock. Some
tracks are similar to the glam rock of the seventies. Different genres give room for different metaphors. In
dance tracks, the imagery is more intense and aggressive. In slow, dark songs, the metaphors become deeper
and sometimes more frightening. However, the music always helps the lyrics to sound more convincing.

Which songs are selected for analysis
◦ Six songs from the Mayhem album were selected for analysis: Abracadabra, Disease, Die with a
Smile, Garden of Eden, Perfect Celebrity, and Vanish Into You. Together, they cover all the main
themes of Mayhem: struggle, pain, love, temptation, fame, and the desire to dissolve into another
person.

ABRACADABRA
1. "Dance or die" Explanation: a metaphor for the struggle of life and the need to act
in order to survive - the dance here symbolizes activity, resistance to circumstances.
2. "The floor is on fire" Explanation: an image of danger and pressure; to "extinguish
the flame," you need to find the right rhythm - that is, to overcome difficulties
through action (dance).

◦ 1. "Poison on the inside" Explanation: a metaphor for inner suffering,
toxic emotions, or mental pain that corrodes a person from the inside.
◦ 2. "I could play the doctor / I can cure your disease" Explanation:
"disease" is a metaphor for mental anguish, trauma, or a crisis; "doctor" is
someone who can help and heal.

◦ 1. "If the world was ending / I'd wanna be next to you"
("If the world was ending / I wish I could be with you.")
Explanation: "The end of the world" is a metaphor for a
global catastrophe, crisis, or inevitable separation. The idea is
that in the most tragic moment, the most important thing is
to stay close to your loved one.
◦ 2. «I just woke up from a dream / Where you and I had to
say goodbye» ("I just woke up(s) from a dream / Where we
had to say goodbye") Explanation: a dream about parting is a
metaphor for fear of loss. Awakening becomes a moment of
realizing the value of the relationship and the desire to hold
on to it.

1. "Garden of Eden" Explanation: The biblical Garden of Eden is reimagined as a metaphor for a seductive but
dangerous space, such as a nightclub or an atmosphere of permissiveness. It is a place where temptation leads to
"falling" - making risky decisions for the sake of momentary pleasure.
2. "You're turnin' green from the adrenaline" Explanation: "Turning green" here is a metaphor for extreme
excitement or stress. The color is associated with envy or nausea, but in the song, it emphasizes the intensity of
the feelings: the adrenaline is so strong that it literally changes a person's state.

CELEDRITY
«I’m made of plastic like a human doll» Explanation: A
metaphor for artificiality and emotional detachment. The lyrical
heroine compares herself to a plastic doll, an object that can be
manipulated without causing it pain. It reflects the loss of
genuine feelings in a world of fame.

VANISH INTO YOU
◦ 1. "Can I disappear into you?" Explanation: The central metaphor of the song. "To dissolve"
means to merge completely - not only physically, but also spiritually. The heroine wants to disappear
as a separate person in order to become a part of a loved one and thereby get rid of the pain of
separation, loneliness or inner emptiness.
◦ 2. "Saw your face and mine / In a picture by our bedsid Explanation: The photo is a metaphor
for a frozen moment of happiness. It reminds us of the past, when the characters were together,
and highlights the contrast between that warmth and the current emptiness. The image by the bed
symbolizes the closeness that has now been lost.

CONCLUSION
◦ During the work on an individual project, an
analysis of the metaphors used in Lady Gaga's
album "Mayhem" was conducted. The study
revealed that the use of metaphorical language
plays a central role in shaping the artistic concept
of the album, allowing not only for the expression
of complex emotions and internal conflicts, but
also for the creation of a cohesive imagery system
that unites all the songs.
