Sigiriya
Have you ever seen a palace on top of a rock?
Today I will tell you about Sigiriya in Sri Lanka. It is an
ancient palace on a very high rock. People also call it Lion
Rock.

History
Sigiriya was built a long time ago, in the 5th century. The
king's name was Kashyapa. He killed his father. Then he
was afraid of his brother. The brother wanted revenge. So
the king built a palace on a high rock. He wanted to hide.

The Rock
The rock is high - 180 metres. It
is like 60 floors. The entrance
was through big stone gates in
the shape of a lion. Now only the
lion's paws remain. On top there
was a palace, swimming pools
and a throne. There are old
paintings on the walls. They are
pictures of women. People call
them 'heavenly maidens.

Discovery
After the king died, the palace was
abandoned. Local people knew about
the rock. But Europeans learned about it
only in the 1820s. Later, archaeologists
started excavations. Now Sigiriya is a
UNESCO site. This means it is very
important for the whole world.

How to Get There
First, I will fly from Rostov-on-Don to Colombo. This is the
capital of Sri Lanka. There is no direct flight. I will have one
or two stops. For example, in Moscow, Istanbul or Dubai.
The whole trip takes 12–16 hours. Then from Colombo I will
go by car to Sigiriya. That is 170 kilometres. The trip takes
three hours. I can take a taxi, or a train and a tuk-tuk. A tuktuk is a small car with three wheels.

Near Sigiriya there are other interesting places.
First, the
city of
Dambulla.
There is a
temple
inside a
cave.
Third,
Minneriya
National
Park. There
you can see
elephants.
Second,
Pidurangala
rock. From there
you can see
Sigiriya.
Fourth, the
city of
Polonnaru
wa. There
are old
palaces
and statues
of Buddha.

Why I Want to Go
I want to go to Sigiriya because it is an unusual place. A
palace on a rock is very beautiful. The king's story is
interesting, even though it is sad. I also want to see
elephants and old temples. I think this trip will be
