The Princes
in the Tower
Many paintings have
amazed and fascinated
me, but this is my favorite
so far.
It is an 1878 history painting by
the British artist John Everett
Millais. It depicts the Princes in the
Tower, Edward V and his younger
brother Richard, Duke of York, in
the Tower of London during the
rule of their uncle Richard III. The
scene drew heavily on William
Shakespeare tragedy Richard III.

The author
Sir John Everett Millais was an
English painter and illustrator who
was one of the founders of the PreRaphaelite Brotherhood. He was a
child prodigy who, aged eleven,
became the youngest student to
enter the Royal Academy Schools.
The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood
strove for strict realism in paintings
that drew thematic inspiration from
religious, literary, and poetic sources,
especially those that dealt with the
themes of love and death. However,
later, he changed his style and
became much more versatile

The history behind the
painting
The boys depicted in the painting are deposed
English King Edward V and his younger brother
Prince Richard of Shrewsbury, Duke of York, heirs to
the throne of King Edward IV. The brothers were the
only sons of the king by his queen, Elizabeth
Woodville, who were aged 12 and 9 years old,
respectively, at the time of their father's death in
1483. They were lodged in the Tower of London by
their paternal uncle and England's regent, Richard,
Duke of Gloucester, in preparation for Edward V's
forthcoming coronation. It is unclear what
happened to the two princes after the last recorded
sighting of them in the tower. It is generally
assumed that they were murdered; a common
hypothesis is that the murder was commissioned by
Richard III in an attempt to secure his hold on the
throne. Their deaths may have occurred sometime
in 1483, but apart from their disappearance, the
only evidence is circumstantial.

Why do I like
this painting?
I like this painting
because of its mysterious
story and the way the
artist captured emotions
and atmosphere. I am
fascinated by the
combination of colors in
this painting, and one
day I would like to
achieve the same level of
mastery in painting.
