THE CHESSBOARD HAS 64 SQUARES;
PLACE THE PIECES ON THE
CHESSBOARD;
FIRST, YOU CAN MOVE A PAWN OR A
KNIGHT;

A PAWN CAN MOVE ONE OR TWOSQUARES FORWARD ON IT’S FIRST
MOVE.
A PAWN CAN CAPTURE OTHER PIECES
BY MOVING ONE SQUARE DIAGONALLY
FORWARD.
WHEN A PAWN REACHES THE 8th RANK,
IT CAN BE PROMOTED TO A KNIGHT,
ROOK, BISHOP OR QUEEN. (EXCEPT A
KING)

A KNIGHT MOVES IN «L» SHAPE: TWOSQUARES IN ONE DIRECTION AND ONE
SQUARE PERPENDICULAR TO IT.
A KNIGHT CAN CAPTURE AN ENEMY
PIECE IF IT STANDS ON A SQUARE THAT
THE KNIGHT CAN REACH WITH LSHAPED MOVE.
THE KNIGHT IS THE ONLY PIECE THAT
CAN JUMP OVER OTHER PIECES.

A BISHOP MOVES DIAGONALLY ANDSTAYS ONLY ON SQUARES OF IT’S OWN
COLORS.
CANNOT JUMP OVER OTHER PIECES.
THE BISHOP CAN CAPTURE AN ENEMY
PIECE IF IT STANDS ON A SQUARE THAT
THE BISHOP CAN REACH.

THE ROOK MOVES ANY NUMBER OFSQUARES HORIZONTALLY OR
VERTICALLY;
LIKE THE BISHOP AND THE KNIGHT, THE
ROOK CAN CAPTURE ENEMY PIECES BY
MOVING TO THEIR SQUARE;
CASTILING IS POSSIBLE IF THE KING
AND ROOK HAVE NEVER MOVED, THE
SQUARES BETWEEN THEM ARE EMPTY,
AND THE KING IS NOT IN CHECK.
7.
THE MOST POWERFUL PIECE ON THEBOARD;
MOVES ANY NUMBER OF SQUARES
HORIZONTALLY, VERTICALLY, OR
DIAGONALLY;
COMBINES THE POWER OF ROOK +
BISHOP IN ONE PIECE;
CAN CAPTURE ANY ENEMY PIECE THAT
STANDS IN IT’S PATH.

THE KING MOVES ONE SQUARE IN ANYDIRECTION, BUT HE CAN NEVER MOVE
INTO CHECK;
CHECKMATE OCCURS WHEN THE KING IS
IN CHECK AND HAS NO LEGAL ESCAPE —
THE GAME ENDS IMMEDIATELY.
STALEMATE IS A DRAW: THE KING IS
SAFE, BUT THE PLAYER HAS NO LEGAL
MOVES LEFT.
