Располагается в предгорьях северозападного Кавказа

Среднегодовое
количество осадков:
днища долин и
межгорных котловин
— 500–600 мм;
равнина - 500–700 мм;
на высоте 2000–2600
м — 1800–2500 мм;
выше 2000 м — до
3000 мм.
Для равнинной части Республики типичны сильные ветры (до 30 м/с), туманы, гололёд, нередки
грозы (до 37 дней в году). Скорость ветра возрастает с высотой от 4,4 до 8,4 м/с. Сильные ветры
(со скоростью 15 м/с и выше) наиболее часты
на высоте 3000–4000 м.
