AxolotlThe axolotl is a young form of some amphibians from Mexico and
other parts of North America. Most often, the axolotl is understood

example, a young tiger ambystoma.

Habitat andunique featu
res of the ax
olotl
Natural habitat.
• Lives in clean, cool water
with a high oxygen
concentration and
abundant vegetation. Its
habitats include Lake
Chapultepec and the
canals of the Xochimilco
lake system in Mexico. In
the past, axolotls inhabited
many lakes in Mexico,
particularly Lakes Chalco
and Xochimilco, located in
the Valley of Mexico.
The key feature is
regeneration.
• The axolotl can
regenerate lost limbs,
gills, repair damaged
internal organs, and even
regrow the spine, part of
the heart, or part of the
brain, up to neural
connections.

Threats and conservation status
The Axolotl is listed in the IUCN Red List as a
species on the verge of extinction. It is estimated
that there are about 1,000 individuals left.
Main threats and protection measures:
• Habitat loss and water pollution, predatory fish
hunting axolotls and poaching are the main
threats to the species.
• For protection, they use the creation of nature
reserves, captive breeding programs, and
clean-up of reservoirs.
