AN ALTERNATIVE QUESTION IS A QUESTION THAT
PRESENTS TWO OR MORE POSSIBLE ANSWERS

They usually contain the word or and
expect the listener to choose one option.
✔ They do not ask for Yes/No.
✔ They ask you to choose.
Example:
— Do you want tea or coffee?
✓ Answer: I’d like coffee.

Structure of Alternative Questions
There are two main types:
A) With an auxiliary verb (Do/Does/Did/Will/Can
etc.)
Structure:
Aux + Subject + Verb + Option 1 or Option 2?
Examples:
Do you prefer cats or dogs?
Can we meet today or tomorrow?
Did he travel by bus or train?

B) With WH-words + alternative
Structure:
Wh-word + Aux + Subject + Verb + Option 1
or Option 2?
Examples:
Where do you study — online or offline?
Which snack do you want — chips or
cookies?
What would you like to do — watch a movie
or play games?

Rewrite the prompts as alternative questions.
You are choosing a drink: water / lemonade.
Ask about meeting time: this evening / tomorrow morning.
Ask your friend about their transport: bus / metro.
You want to know which project to work on: presentation / essay.
Ask someone where they want to go: café / park.
Ask about the device: laptop / tablet.
Ask about the type of film: comedy / drama.
Ask about the lesson format: online / offline.
Examples:
Would you like water or lemonade?
Can we meet this evening or tomorrow morning?

Students interview each other using 10
alternative questions they create.
They must ask about:
✔ hobbies
✔ school/university
✔ travel
✔ free time
✔ food
✔ technology

student presents:
