teaching
2. What are the criteria?
• Criteria are specific aspects of student performance that are assessed in a task. They representthe essential components of the learning objectives being measured.
• For example, in the speaking task, fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary use, and interaction are
assessed;
in the writing task, grammar accuracy, coherence, vocabulary use, and punctuation are assessed;
• in the reading task, comprehension, skimming and scanning, inference, and vocabulary
recognition;
• in the listening task, understanding main ideas, identifying details, interpreting tone and intention,
and following spoken instructions.
• Criteria matter because they set clear expectations, helping students understand what is required to
succeed. Also, criteria guide teachers in designing lessons and activities that address key skills.
Moreover, by assessing specific aspects of performance, criteria reduce subjective judgments.
3. What are descriptors?
Descriptors are detailed statements that define performance levels for each criterion. They clearly describewhat constitutes excellent, satisfactory, or needs-improvement performance.
• Examples of descriptors for a writing task (Criterion: Grammar Accuracy):
1. Excellent: Demonstrates virtually no grammar errors; uses complex structures effectively.
2. Good: Contains few grammar errors; generally, uses correct sentence structures.
3. Needs Improvement: Frequent grammar errors hinder meaning and clarity.
• Effective descriptors have key characteristics such as clarity, which means using specific, measurable language
(e.g., "no more than 2 minor errors"); differentiation, which means clearly distinguishing between performance
levels; and alignment, which ensures descriptors reflect the learning objectives and the skill being assessed.
