History of RussiaUntil 1918, Russia was a monarchy. The King was known as the Tsar and
the Queen as the Tsarina.
The last Tsar of Russia was Nicholas II. Most of the European royal
families were closely connected. Nicholas II was the cousin of George V,
the King of England during that time.
Russia was a land of great contrasts
at that time. The royal family and
the aristocracy lived a life of great
luxury; however, the vast majority of
Russians lived in poverty. In addition
to this, 1.7 million Russian soldiers
were killed in the First World War.
This led to revolution.
7.
The Russian RevolutionA group of people called the Bolsheviks believed that Russia should not be
ruled by a monarchy.
In 1917, they seized power by taking
control of government buildings and
Tsar Nicholas abdicated.
Nicholas, his wife and their five
children were killed in 1918.

World War, there was a period known as the Cold War. During this time,
there was an intense rivalry between the USSR and the USA. Britain was
