According to the Russian legislation asset management companies (AMCs), pension funds and insurance companies are obliged
to keep securities and certain assets in a specialized depositary (SD). SD oversees clients’ trades and their compliance with legal
requirements.
When a client wants to trade on foreign markets, SD is obliged to have a nominee account in a foreign depository or custodian.
The activities of specialized depositories are regulated by the Central Bank of Russia.
