2. THIS FRAGILE PLANET
3.
The wordenvironment
means simply
what is around us.
Some people live
in a town
environment; for
others, their
environment is the
countryside.
4.
But the air webreathe, the soil on
which we stand and
walk, the water we
drink are all part of
the environment.
5.
Nowadays peopleunderstand how
important it is to
solve the
environmental
problems that
endanger people's
lives. The most
serious
environmental
problems are:
6. - pollution in its many forms – water pollution.
7. - air pollution
8. Nuclear pollution.
9. - nuclear pollution
10. - noise from cars, buses, planes, etc,
11. - destruction of wildlife
12.
- and thebeauty of the
countryside;
13. - shortage of natural resources (metals, different kinds of fuel)
14. - the growth of population.
15.
There is no ocean orsea which is not
used as a dump.
The Pacific Ocean,
especially, has
suffered from
nuclear pollution
because the French
Government tests
nuclear weapons
there..
16.
Many seas are usedfor dumping
industrial and
nuclear waste.
Britain alone dumps
250,000 tons of
industrial waste
straight into the
North Sea.
17.
This poisons andkills fish and sea
animals. "Nuclearpoisoned" fish can
be eaten by
people.
18.
Many rivers andlakes are poisoned
too. Fish and reptiles
can't live in them.
There is not enough
oxygen in the water.
19.
In such places allthe birds leave their
habitats and many
plants die.
20.
If people drinkthis water they
can die too.
21.
It happens sobecause
factories and
plants produce a
lot of waste and
pour it into rivers.
22.
23.
When theAmericans decided
to clean up the
Statue of Liberty in
1986, the first thing
they had to do was
to make a hole in
her nose and take
away the acid rain
that had collected
inside.
24.
The polluted air ofNew York had mixed
with the rain and
damaged the Statue
badly.
25.
And you certainlyknow that most of the
pollution in big cities
comes from cars and
buses.
26.
More and moreoften people are
told not to spend
too much time in
direct sunlight,
27.
because ultravioletradiation from the sun
can cause skin
cancer.
28.
Normally theozone layer in the
atmosphere
protects us from
such radiation,
29.
but if there are holesin the ozone layer
ultraviolet radiation
can get to the earth.
30.
Many scientists thinkthat these holes are
the result of air
pollution.
31.
Nuclear powerstations can go
wrong and cause
nuclear pollution.
This happened in
Wind Scale in
Britain,
32.
in Three MileIsland in the
USA
33.
and Chernobyl in theformer Soviet Union.
34.
Nuclear pollutioncannot be seen but
its effects can be
terrible.
35.
To make air cleanagain we need good
filters at nuclear
power stations, at
factories and plants
and also in cars and
buses.
36.
Both clean air andclean water are
necessary for our
health. If people
want to survive
they must solve
these problems
quickly.
37.
Man is beginning tounderstand that his
environment is not just
his own town or
country, but the whole
earth. That's why
people all over the
world think and speak
so much about
ecology.
