A serious failure occurred as a result of a
number of engineering and human errors.

THE EXPLOSION DESTROYED THE REACTOR AND THE
NUCLEAR POWER PLANT BUILDING, AND ALSO SPREAD
RADIOACTIVE ELEMENTS OVER A SIGNIFICANT AREA, WHICH
A F F E C T E D N O T O N LY T H E T E R R I TO RY O F U K R A I N E , B U T
ALSO REACHED THE FAR CORNERS OF EUROPE.

The Chernobyl disaster could probably have been
prevented, or at least its consequences significantly
mitigated, if several key aspects had been taken into
account and properly implemented:
• Reactor design and construction
• Personnel training
• Risk management and operating protocols
• Monitoring and emergency protection systems
