The former building of the Rail-way station was built in1913 in accordance with the project by Finnish architects
Saarinrn and Geselius, founders of the so-called “new
style” in architecture. Saarinen was among the first
architects to design sky-scrapes in New-York.

The old building of the railway station and the so-called Pietinenshouse opposite it were main components of the adjacent square.
Unfortunately, during the past war it
was laid flat. The new one was
constructed in 1953. The project
was made by a Soviet architect
Speransky and a group of
Leningradian architects.

On the left side of the square the Pietinens house is situated. Ithad been planned by architects Young and Bomansson, facades
were decorated by Lindgren.
The building occupied the site opposite the railway station,
and due to the architect’s intention it should become a wise
component of the main entrance to the town.

The house has an inner yard, a nice arch leads into it. Itsexterior look was paid special attention to. The facades
of Pietinen’s house is the one and only preserved work
of the well-known Finnish architect Lindgren.

Picturesque balconies, the shapeand rhythm of its windows and
many other details of
decorations enabled to avoid
monotony and to give a fresh
and original look to the house.
The main façade of the
house is decorated
with the bas-reliefs of
the personages from
the Finnish-Karelian
epos “Kalevala”.
