Nua Healthcare Services
Educate to Employ Presentation

2.

Hello
Welcome to Nua Healthcare Services.
We’d like to tell you a little bit about us, what we do, the sector in which we work and the rules and regulations we
work with. This is particularly important if you’ve never worked in healthcare before but you’d like to make a positive
contribution to your community with us.
At the end of this presentation you should have a clearer idea whether or not a position with Nua is right for you
and, if we agree that it is, we want to work with you.

3.

How this works
Think of this presentation as a part of your interview. It will give you a better idea of our sector and of our service so
that you can then decide if a career in healthcare with Nua really is right for you.
At the end, you’ll have an assessment to make sure you are fully informed and, if you pass, you will be offered either:
1. A contract of employment with induction commencement time and job placement
2. An offer pending the next available job placement opportunity
Nua Healthcare Services is an equal opportunities employer and is very aware that if you are moving into healthcare
from another type of job – for example, retail – you will need all the information we can give you so that you don’t
feel at a later stage that you might have made a mistake.
Ready? Let’s go.

What is social care?
Social care is about providing care to children and adults who have a range of complex needs.
The goal is to help people to live full lives, as independently as possible, in the community.
The core principles include:
1. Respect for the dignity of each individual
2. Personalised care
3. Empowering people to achieve their full potential
Social care ensures each individual is involved throughout the decision-making process of their own care. It’s
about empowering people to shape their own lives and the services they receive.
Social care helps us to meet the physical, social and emotional needs of individuals. Social care work uses
strengths-based, needs-led approaches to support people.
A social care practitioner usually works in a direct, person-to-person way, supporting our clients as they develop
their life skills which, in turn, enables them to realise their own full potential. Each individual is encouraged to
participate in a range of personalised services and community-based recreational activities.

Regulator: The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA)
HIQA is Ireland’s independent authority responsible for driving quality, safety and accountability in residential
services for children, older people and people with disabilities.
In 2013 they began inspections and registering designated centres.
Before 2013, Nua Healthcare Services had already developed and begun to implement policies, procedures and
ways of working which were based on the draft national standards and later, the National Standards for
Residential Services for Children and Adults with Disabilities.
You’ll find all of Nua Healthcare’s inspection reports on our website.

Mental health services
The most recent addition to Nua Healthcare’s care pathway, our mental health services include our approved
centres and community mental health homes. These services help us to provide a full range of care to our new
and existing service users. Nua’s approved centre is registered with the Mental Health Commission and the
services are delivered by our clinical director, psychiatrists, psychologists, mental health nurses and social care
workers and strengthened by our multi-disciplinary team and other health professionals, if needed. Our
operational teams also oversee and support these services.
Our mental health services recognise the unique recovery journey each individual makes and so we approach
rehabilitation with wellness recovery action planning, which focuses on delivering recovery-focused outcomes.
A person’s treatment is an extremely individual and personal journey which is why we design and deliver our
mental health services in a highly personalised way. This means that we can cater for quite a large range of
conditions as we recognise that people don’t usually fall neatly into one diagnostic box.

Day services and community outreach
Community outreach
Nua’s community outreach services are available to both children and adults with disabilities and mental health
conditions. Many individuals use Nua services as a stepping stone towards joining the rest of the community
when they feel they are ready. Our team of care staff work closely with each individual, preparing them for taking
on opportunities further afield and outside the realms of the day centres. To make this happen, the team works
collectively amongst other day service facilities, the staff teams, the local community and most importantly, in line
with each individual’s wants, needs and preferences.
Our community outreach team plans activities and events throughout the year, months in advance. Activities are
both educational and recreational and include the likes of trips to the Science Gallery, the National Museum of
Ireland, Dublin Zoo, The National Aquatic Centre, Newgrange, Blarney, the Giants Causeway and Titanic
Experience, the Cavan Centre, Tulfarris Activity Centre and much more.
Community outreach services also offer individuals an opportunity to join an array of sports clubs, including
soccer, Gaelic games, rugby, tennis and badminton. We also help them to get involved in local social clubs such as
bowling, walking groups, movie nights and disco nights as well as participating in a number of educational classes
such as cooking, knitting, independent living skills, life-long learning and much more.
