The Queen’s surname is Windsor.
The British royal family changed
their last name – Saxe-CoburgGotha during the First World War
because it sounded too ‘German’.
Anti-German feeling in the county
was so strong that King George V
dropped all his German titles and
changed the family name to
Windsor – after his castle of the
same name.

The future ruler was
born on April 21,
1926 in London into
the family of Prince
Albert (better known
as King George VI)
and Elizabeth
Bowles-Lyon.

thirteen, she met her future
husband, Prince Philip, who
was the son of A.
Glucksburg and a

Victoria. In 1947, the young
couple got married, after
