4. Chlorine
Around 1630, chlorine gas was firstsynthesized.
In 1774 Carl Wilhelm Scheele wrote
a description of chlorine gas.
In 1810 by Sir Humphry Davy
chemists suggested that the gas might
be an element.
It was named from Ancient
Greek: χλωρός, translit. khlôros, lit.
'pale green' based on its colour.
5. Iodine
The elemental form was discoveredby the French chemist Bernard
Courtois in 1811.
It was named two years later
by Joseph-Louis Gay-Lussac from this
property, after the Greek ἰώδης "violet-
coloured".
6. Bromine
The element was discovered byCarl Jacob Löwig (in 1825) and Antoine
Jérôme Balard (in 1826),
Its name was derived from
the Ancient Greek βρῶμος ("stench"),
referencing its sharp and disagreeable
smell.
7. Fluorine
The element was discovered byFrench chemist Henri Moissan in 1886.
It was named by Latin
verb fluo meaning "flow".
8. Astatine
The first synthesis of the element was in1940 by Dale R. Corson, Kenneth Ross
MacKenzie, and Emilio G. Segrè.
It was named
the Greek astatos (ἄστατος), meaning
"unstable".
