Ken lived in a house near the ocean. One day, heheard a tsunami alarm. He didn't have any time
to evacuate, so he climbed onto his roof. He could
see the wave coming and it terrified him. He prayed
for his life. The wave came crashing down on Ken's
house and swept it away. Ken was thrown into the
water and pulled under. He struggled to swim to the
surface, but the current was too strong. He felt his
lungs burning for air and then everything went black.
A while later Ken woke up. He was lying on the
beach. He must have been swept there by the current.
He was alive, but his house was gone.

A strange caseIt was a bitingly cold day in January. There was a hint of snow in the air, and the sky was so
dark that it seemed to be night-time. We were all standing in the playing fields, wearing our sports kit
and feeling pretty miserable, when a shrill whistle sounded. ‘OK everyone, line up!’ shouted our sports
master, Mr. Davies, a well-built Welshman with a full head of ginger hair, who didn’t understand the
meaning of the word cold. He briskly selected two teams and we reluctantly started to play a game of
rugby.
It had been raining a lot the previous few days, and the pitch had turned into a field of
mud. I could hear the squelch under my boots every time I moved. Suddenly, someone passed me the
ball, and I just managed to hold on to it as my hands were almost frozen. I ran a few yards but then I
was tackled hard and I fell to the ground. I was pushing on the muddy surface with my hands to try to
get up, when I felt something hard and metallic.
I went over to Mr. Davies and told him about it – after all, someone could cut their knee if
they happened to fall there. He immediately stopped the match and we all quickly went over to look at
the mysterious object. ‘Jenkins, Peters and Sullivan, go to the gardener’s shed and get some shovels,’
said Mr. Davies. ‘In the meantime, the rest of you run around the pitch to keep warm,’ he added. As
soon as the shovels appeared, we started digging. It was easy work as the ground was so soft after all
the rain. After a short time, we pulled out a large metallic case from the depths of the mud.
We opened the case, and at first all we could see were some old clothes. We were a bit
disappointed because we were expecting something a bit more exciting. But the moment we lifted the
clothes up, we saw lots of diamonds that were shining brilliantly, despite the dullness of the day. Then
Mr. Davies said, ‘I’ll take care of this, boys. There’s no need to tell anyone about it.’
The next day Mr. Davies didn’t come in to school. He had called in to say that he was sick.
It’s now three weeks since we found the case, and he still hasn’t come back …
