‘Sell by’ or ‘best before’ dates
Things that a supermarket sells are often called goods or produce.
To help customers know a supermarket goods or produce is safe to buy, all
food and drink has a sell by or best before date.
A sell by date means the product will not
stay fresh and safe to eat for long and should
be eaten by or soon after the date.
There may also be a use by date, which is
the last date the food is safe to eat.

The food or drink will be fine to eat or drink for a while after
a best before date, but may not taste as good.
There may also be a display until date, which is the
last date the supermarket will sell the goods.
