The territory of New York was
originally inhabited by tribal
Indians. Europeans began to settle
here in 1624. Americans finally
established themselves in it in
1783. Until the 20th century, the
inhabitants of New York were
mainly European immigrants.

4.

In the middle of the 19th century
they were mostly Irish and
Germans, and half a century later Jews and Italians. In the early
1940s, whites made up 94% of the
city's residents. But then they
began to move to the suburbs, and
their place was taken by
representatives of other
nationalities. In recent decades, its
inhabitants have included, for
example, Indians, Chinese and
Pakistanis, and from Latin
American states. By the end of the
80s, whites had lost their absolute
majority in New York.
