• In the 19th century, on the island of Madeira in Portugal, the locals in
the village of Monte needed transport that would quickly take them
to the city of Funchal. This means of transportation still exists today.
And it is very popular among tourists.

The sleigh is made of eucalyptus wood. The wicker
basket is mounted on wooden runners lubricated
with oil to facilitate sliding.

Drivers are called correiros. There are about 150
of them, and all of them are assigned certain
numbers, which are transferred to their students
after retirement. Dressed in white trousers and
shirts and a straw hat, they ride a sleigh in pairs.
To slow down the sled, they wear special boots
with thick soles.

The journey starts from the Church of the Holy
Virgin of Monte, the descent goes to Estrada do
Livramento. At a speed of over 30 km per hour,
you can make a trip around the city in ten
minutes.
