1. Ancient Japanese Clothing

In many civilizations, including our own, clothing
has always been an outward expression of
identity. Think of someone you know well and
think of the clothes they wear. Does their clothing
tell you something about the type of person
they are? In many ancient societies, clothing
depicted clues to the identity of the wearer
including social status, wealth, career and
religious beliefs.

The Kimono
• The Kimono is synonamous with Japanese
clothing. Even today, when we think of clothing in
Japan we tend to think about Kimonos. Kimonos
are a type of robe worn by women. The style,
colour, and material of a Kimono can tell you a lot
about the wearer

• Geisha wore Susohiki kimonos, these made it
obvious to the public what these women did for a
living.

4. The Hakama

• The Hakama is a wide skirt (or sometimes split
pants) with seven pleats.
• The Hakama was especially popular among warriors
as their opponents could not see their footwork
during battle.

5. Zori

• Zari are the traditional footwear of Japan. They
are open toed sandals that were worn by both
men and women.
