VANDE MATARAM
• Before Jana Gana Mana Vande Mataram as a
Indian anthem.
• Vande Mataram is a Sanskrit poem written by
Bankim Chandra Chettarjee in 1870.
• Published on 1882.
• This poem was first sung by Rabindranath
Tagore in 1896.

ABOUT RABINDRANATH TAGORe
• Rabindranath Tagore was a founder of Indian
national anthem.
• He was born on 7 May 1861.
• He wrote poetry as an 85 years old.
• He was also known as “The Bard of Bangal”.

HISTORY OF ANTHEM
• The poem was published in January 1912.
• Outside of Kolkata ,the song was first sung by
himself at a session in Besant Theosophical
college in Madanpalle, Andhra Pradesh on 28
February .
• On the occation of India attaining freedom,
the Indian constituent assembly assembled
for the first time as a sovereign body on 14
August 1947 at midnight.

• After independence India was take three years
to decide one the national anthem.
• The song was selected as national anthem by
Shubhash Chandra Bose while he was in
Germany.

general assembly of the united nations held at

MEANING
• First stanza: People of India will ask for your good
blessing and glory.
• Second stanza:People of religions live together.
• Third stanza:Praised to the king for being the
messeger of good wishes.
• Forth stanza: It says that people of India are
drowed in deep ignorance.
• Fifth stanza:With your sympathetic plans,the
sleeping Bharat will wake up.

Why did Vande Mataram not get
chosen as the National Anthem?
• Islam being monotheist religion, the elevation of
any deity or individual to a divine status does not
sit well.
• Vande Mataram ,in some of its verses invoke
Hindu deities.
• Additionally the fact that song was included in
Ananadamath does not sit well with some
people.
• It was adopted by the constituent assembly of
India as the national anthem.

USAGE
• It is played on national holidays,festivals and
sporting events.
• In our India there are in most of school daily
sing the national song.
• Many radio and television stations have playes
the national anthem when the sign in and sign
out.

• The national anthem underlines the
importance of India as a nation.
• It signifies that that despite differences in
culture traditions,traditions’religion and
languages, India is united under one flage.
• The anthem is significant in uniting people
and reminding us that there we stand and
remain one under the Indian union.
