An overview of the industry
The book industry is one of the largest cultural sectors in Spain
Latin America remains the main destination for Spain’s exports (€180.55 million
in 2021). Mexico is Spain’s most lucrative recipient of Spanish exports

Throughout 2021, the book industry in Spain generated almost 2.5
billion euros in sales and generally demonstrates an annual increase.
Over one-third of people surveyed in Spain said they read every day or
almost every day in 2020.

In 2020 non-university textbooks generated 765.5 million euros in revenue
and took the highest revenue.
In 2020 there were 181.3 million book copies printed in Spain. As for sales
points, bookstores are Spain’s first book distribution channel. In 2020, a total
of 22,005 people were employed in the publishing subsector.

institutions in university and higher education, grouped into Planeta
Formación y Universidades. The Group also has a large direct-sales
network and is co-owner of Casa del Libro, the leading bookstore chain in
Spain. It is a reference shareholder in the right-wing newspaper La Razón.
Planeta has grown into a group operating in more than 20 countries and
connecting daily with more than 30 million people.
