The Baikonur
Cosmodrome is the
world's first and
largest
cosmodrome,
located on the
territory of
Kazakhstan
between the city of
Kazalinsk and the
village of Dzhusaly,
near the village of
Tyuratam.
The territory of the Baikonur cosmodrome is 6717 km²

The launch of the first artificial Earth satellite and the first human flight into space was
carried out from the Baikonur cosmodrome, manned spacecraft of the Vostok, Voskhod,
Soyuz series, orbital stations of the Salyut, Mir series, the Energy -Buran reusable
system, interplanetary spacecraft were launched, artificial satellites of the Earth.

More than half of the
world's space launches
have been made from the
Baikonur cosmodrome. In
2008, Russia carried out 27
launches of launch
vehicles, retaining the first
place in the world in terms
of the number of launches.
19 of them were made from
the Baikonur cosmodrome.
In 2008, the United States
conducted 134 launches of
launch vehicles, including
four "shuttles". China
launched 11 rockets into
space, Europe - six. Other
countries have carried out
three or fewer launches.

Construction
When choosing a site for the construction of the landfill, the following
criteria were guided: a vast, sparsely populated area, whose lands were little
used in agricultural production, the presence of a railway line for the delivery
of various cargoes to the landfill, including rocket blocks; reliable sources of
fresh water to provide the landfill with drinking and process water in large
volumes; the distance between the launch of the rocket and the crash site its
head part (the Kura landfill in Kamchatka) is at least 7000 km.

The desert in Kazakhstan to the east of the Aral Sea, near one of the largest rivers of
Central Asia, the Syr Darya and the Moscow-Tashkent railway was chosen for the landfill.
Also, the advantages of the place as a launch site were more than three hundred sunny
days a year and relative proximity to the equator.

By the beginning of the tests and launches, 527 engineers and 237 technicians were at the test site, the
total number of military personnel was 3600 people. People prepare rockets for testing, "teach" them to fly.
