BISHKEK – THE CAPITAL OFTHE KYRGYZ REPUBLIC
Bishkek has been the capital of the Kyrgyz Republic since 1991, but the
place has had many names over the course of its history. Before 1991,
the city was called Frunze, named after a Soviet military leader born
here. Before 1926, the place was known as Pishpek and had a Kokand
fortress, which was conquered by Tsarist Russia in 1862.

ALA -TOO SQUAREAccording to a legend, Bishkek was Baatyr (or hero), who was born and raised
in this region. He was brave and fair; he protected his people, making the
region secure and suitable for traders and travelers. The name Bishkek is
derived from a utensil important to nomads used in making a fermented horse
milk drink called Kymyz. Most of the tours start in the city center, next to the
flag, where you’ll also find another national hero, Manas, and the national
museum.

• Ala-Too Square is the central square of Bishkek, thecapital of Kyrgyzstan. Along its perimeter are the State
Historical Museum, the Friendship of Peoples
Monument, Oak Park with an open-air sculpture
museum and St. Nicholas Church, the oldest building in
the city

White house• The White House is the presidential office building in Bishkek,
Kyrgyzstan. The White House was the site of riots during both the 2005
Tulip Revolution and the 2010 Kyrgyzstani riots. During the 2010 riots a
fire broke out and damaged portions of the building and destroyed the
hard copies of many government records.

Victory Square• Victory Square (Kyrgyz: жеңиш чарчы, Russian: Площадь
победы) is a public square in the city of Bishkek, the capital of
Kyrgyzstan. It is dedicated to the Victory in the Victory over Nazi
Germany. It was created in 1984.The central area is filled with an
eternal fire, The square is held together by three ribs of red granite
representing a yurt. A Guard of Honour company from the National
Guard of Kyrgyzstan guards the eternal flame, with the Changing
of the Guard Ceremony taking place every hour.

OPERA & BALLET THEATREAfter the park on the big central street, you’ll come
across the national theater of Opera & Ballet that was
opened on May 15, 1955.

Ala Archa National Park• Ala-Archa State Natural Park is located in Kyrgyzstan
at a distance of 41 km from its capital on the northern
slope of the Kyrgyz Range at an altitude of 1600–4860
m. It covers an area of 2280 ha.

PHILHARMONIC HALLThis square, near the philharmonic hall and universities, is well worth a
look. Philharmonic Hall can fit up to 1500 people and was built in 1980
by A. Pechenochkin.

CIRCUSWalking further you can see a permanent circus building that was
finished in 1976.

OSH BAZAARWhile in Bishkek do not miss an opportunity to shop in Osh Bazaar
where you can buy anything from a Kalpak hat to a bag of fresh fruits.
The major building at this bazaar is called Kyjal and was built in 1983.
