• By 1924,no Asian immigrants were permitted into
the USA, the law changed in 1949 and Chinese
were allowed to become American citizens.

Black Americans• About 500,000 Africans were brought to colonies
as slaves between 1619-1808.
• By 1810,there were 7.2 mln.people in the USA,of
which 1.2 mln. were slaves and 186768 free
blacks.
• In 1863,president Abraham Lincoln signed the
Emancipation Proclamation,freeing slaves.
Slavery was completely abolished in 1865,with
the passage of the 13th Amendment to the
Constitution.

• Benjamin Banneker –astronomer,mathematician,author and inventor.
In a famous letter to Th.Jefferson asked the
statesman to live up to the full meaning of his
words,”all men are created equal”
• Paul Cuffe organized the friendly society to help
former slaves go to Africa as free people to set up
a new nation. After Cuffe’s death ,this resulted in
creation of the Republic of Liberia.

congress in 1850.
• The 14th Amendment gave blacks full citizenship
• Dr.Charles Drew saved millions of lives during
World War II by his discovery of a way to preserve
blood
• Dr.Ralph Bundle ,Undersecretary General of the
UN saved countless lives by promoting peace in
the Middle East during the late 1940s .He was
awarded the 1950 Nobel Peace Prize.

• Martin Luther King, a black leader, in 1964 he wasawarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of
his decade of leadership in nonviolent protest
against discrimination.
• He was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee, on
April 4,1968.
• In 1989,44% of employed blacks held “white
color “ jobs-managerial,professional and
administrative positions rather than service jobs
or jobs requiring physical labour-compared to
40% in 1983.
